May 17, 2021: Despite being an A-lister herself, Kim Kardashian is a super fangirl, and she doesn’t hold back with letting fans know that on social media. The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star frequently takes to her Instagram Story and Twitter to express her love for TV shows (read: Bridgerton), and extraordinary fashion finds. Likewise, she’s big into purchasing memorabilia and documenting the experience for her 221 million Instagram followers. We’re not talking signed T-shirts or coffee mugs—the mom of three only does the most. Most recently, the KKW mogul purchased one of Janet Jackson’s most iconic outfits for $25,000.
Over the weekend, Jackson partnered with Beverly Hills-based Julien’s Auctions on a three-day auction entitled “Iconic Treasures from the Legendary Career and Life of Janet Jackson.” A portion of the auction’s proceeds benefitted Compassion International, a nonprofit organization focused on providing humanitarian aid for children living below the poverty line. In honor of the “Rhythm Nation” singer’s 55th birthday on Sunday, May 16, Kardashian purchased a custom-made cropped suede top with artificial bone detailing and a pair of black pants with laces up the front. These pieces make up Jackson’s very outfit in her “If” music video from 1993.
Kardashian celebrated Jackson on social media. “Happy birthday, queen!” she wrote on her Instagram Story alongside a clip of the songwriter wearing the famous ensemble. “For @janetjackson’s bday bc I’m such a fan I can’t believe I won this on @juliens_auctions,” she wrote. Better yet, the singer responded to Kardashian on her own social media page. “Thank u so much @kimkardashian! I hope ‘IF’ gives u as much pleasure as it did me,” she wrote along with three kissing face emojis.
This isn’t the first time the reality star has dug into the archives of the Jackson family. In 2019, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West—from whom she filed divorce in February—bought their daughter North West one of Michael Jackson’s custom jackets. “North is a really big Michael Jackson fan and we knew she would love this,” Kardashian West said on her Instagram Story. “We won this on an auction.”
