Back in 2014, Katy Perry hit the MTV VMAs red carpet wearing matching double denim looks with her date for the night, Riff Raff. Making no secret of her outfit inspiration, the singer tweeted directly to Britney Spears, who famously wore top-to-toe double denim with her boyfriend at the time, Justin Timberlake, on the red carpet in the early aughts.

“I must admit my outfit is a result of my love for nostalgia and my tumblr addiction…I did my best impression, hope u likey!” Perry tweeted to Spears. Thankfully, Spears subscribes to the notion of imitation being the highest form of flattery and was completely on board with the recreation, writing back, “Just when I thought the denim dress had retired….you bring it back! You looked amazing tonight bb.”

Fast forward to today and the ’90s and early aughts are back in full force on the runways. So it makes sense that so too would double denim return to the red carpet. And in lieu of Spears herself reviving her iconic moment (please), Perry is the perfect person.

On the 2022 CMA Awards red carpet on Wednesday night, the singer wore an off-shoulder corseted top and baggy jeans by Porto-based brand Marques’Almeida. Featuring an oversized bow on the waist and an acid-wash colorway, Perry’s loose-fitting jeans were perfectly juxtaposed by her tight top, which was completed with a deep V-neck and off-the-shoulder sleeves.

Perry accessorized by upping the camp with a pair of nude, sparkly heels with pearls and a diamond choker around her neck. Wearing her long brunette hair in loose waves and a glossy pink lip, the singer looked positively glowing on the red carpet. A+, all around.

Of course, it takes an army, to whom Perry made sure to pay tribute in her Instagram dump from the night, using the final slide to show her posing backstage with her stylist, Tatiana Waterford, and glam squad, Michael Anthony and Jesus Guerrero.
