It seems impossible to imagine the cult film Notting Hill without Julia Roberts. Yet, the actress was on the verge of refusing her now-loved role.

As everyone will recall, the film revolves around the love story between American actress Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) and the owner of a London bookstore, William Thacker (played by Hugh Grant).

In an interview for the latest issue of British Vogue, Julia Roberts told director Richard Curtis, who wrote Notting Hill, that she hesitated a lot before accepting the role of Anna Scott.

The reason? Because the character was, like Julia herself, a movie star.

From the outside, it might seem easy for an actor to play the role of another actor. But Julia Roberts didn’t see it that way.

“Honestly, one of the most challenging things I’ve ever had to do was your film, playing a movie actress,” said the 56-year-old actress during the interview.

“I was so uncomfortable! I almost didn’t take the part because it seemed… well, it seemed so awkward, I didn’t even know how to portray that person.”

The Hollywood actress revealed that she “especially hated being dressed as a movie star.”

For this reason, during the famous scene where her character tells the bookstore owner, “I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her,” Julia Roberts asked to wear her personal clothes, the ones she had shown up with on set, and not the wardrobe department’s chosen outfits.

During the interview, Julia Roberts also talked about her affinity for romantic comedies.

“I love the genre. Although I also think it’s incredibly complicated.”

I didn’t realize how lucky I was until I left it behind. Just think that I acted in Pretty Woman, Notting Hill, and My Best Friend’s Wedding. Usually, opportunities like these don’t come so consecutively. So, I think I’ve been lucky.”
