As the 2022 Academy Awards attempts to streamline its televised ceremony, some logistical changes may cause Jessica Chastain to skip walking the glitzy red carpet this year. In a switch-up from years’ past, the Oscars will present eight technical categories an hour before the mainstream broadcast, and will edit the acceptance speeches to air during the main show. Those categories in the revised line-up include, documentary short, film editing, original score, animated short, live-action short, production design, sound, and makeup/hairstyling.

Chastain, who’s nominated for Best Actress for her role in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, has just spoken out about the broadcast change, showing her support for her film’s Oscar-nominated makeup department.

In an appearance on Next Best Picture podcast this week, Chastain stated that she would miss the red carpet in order to cheer on her film’s makeup team. “I will absolutely be present when the makeup category is being called, and if that means I’m not doing press on the red carpet or ABC or whatever it is, then so be it.”

Responsible for dramatically transforming Chastain into the American evangelist TV personality Tammy Faye Bakker, The Eyes of Tammy Faye makeup department includes Justin Raleigh, Stephanie Ingram and Linda Dowds. They spent hours equipping Chastain with prosthetics, wigs and makeup so intense, the sheer amount of heavy foundation may have caused “permanent damage” to Chastain’s skin, the actress previously said.

On the podcast Chastain explained why she wants to be by their side on Sunday. “The most important thing for me is to honor the incredible artisans who work in our industry,” she said. “So much attention is on the actors, we’re like the face in some ways, because you go to a movie, and you see us. A lot of people don’t understand how beyond an actor a performance is. Look at this incredible makeup team, Tammy Faye goes through three decades.”

This marks Chastain’s third Academy Award nomination, (she was previously up for Best Supporting Actress for The Help in 2012 and Best Actress for Zero Dark Thirty in 2013). The star brought home the SAG Award and the Critics Choice Award this year for her transformative Tammy Faye portrayal.

Having produced and worked on the Tammy Faye project for 10 years, here’s hoping she takes home the golden statue Sunday night, whether she walks the red carpet or not.

The 2022 Oscars will air March 27 at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
