It’s 7:28 AM, and my hair is in a less-than-photogenic top knot. Since it’s Monday and I have no plans to leave the house, it’s looking like this is about to become my hairstyle for the day. But in a fantasy world in which I have a red carpet to attend later this afternoon, I’d be recreating Jennifer Lopez’s “wet” bob from the 2020 American Music Awards. The look is a sophisticated take on the crunchy curls we all rocked in the noughties.
Celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton took to Instagram to break down the steps of his “wet” hair look for his 1.4 million followers. First, the L.A.-based pro applied the cult-favorite Color Wow Dream Coat Anti-Frizz Treatment For Curly Hair on Lopez’s wet strands and then dried them using the Leandro Limited Carbon Ionic Hairdryer with the diffuser attachment for control.
After that, he applied Color Wow Pop & Lock High Gloss Shellac in two-inch sections before using the BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium 1.25″ Spring Curling Iron set on the lowest heat setting. He twisted the tool through the hair from roots to end to achieve a loose wave and then blasted her locks with Color Wow Extra Shine Spray. If Lopez’s “wet” hairstyle looks familiar, that’s because it’s one of Appleton’s signature red carpet creations. Kim Kardashian also rocked a similar version of the hairstyle at the 2019 Met Gala, which perfectly complemented her corseted Thierry Mugler dress. “I loved that because it was so different and so risky,” Appleton tells us over the phone. He loved how it looked, but wasn’t sure how it would photograph on the red carpet. That look is hands-down one of our all-time favorites from the KKW Beauty founder.
