While filming her latest rom-com, Marry Me, Jennifer Lopez admitted that it wasn’t hard for her to tap into her character since she went through something similar in real life.

In the flick, the Hollywood starlet plays a superstar who finds out that her fiancé is cheating on her — right before they are supposed to get married on television. So, she decides to tie the knot with a random concertgoer (Owen Wilson).

“It was so much about it that, really, I could understand like nobody else could understand,” she explained. “Kind of bearing my soul. It was actually a little bit more uncomfortable than playing a character that is nothing like you, because this is you kinda like really bringing real, personal life experience into a role in a way that I’ve never had to.”

“There were a lot of similarities — obviously she is an entertainer, in the public eye a long time, personal struggles, public career ups and downs, I know all of those things,” she said. “I didn’t have to do any research. Why I say it was cathartic was because I had to do something I have never done, which is to let out of the feelings that no one ever gets to see. As I am doing it, there is a part of me that was guarded, very guarded. I don’t put this out there, I don’t let people know that if I see something on TV, it hurts, I am good, I am OK. I am going to go out there, sing this song, I had a bad day, it doesn’t matter. This is my life. I am a professional. I try to be.”

Lopez, who is the Queen of rom-coms, is thrilled for people to see her back on the big screen.

I would say it’s a true romance story, which I love,” the “Marry Me” crooner, who is currently dating Ben Affleck, revealed. It’s the first time I’ve done music and film together since Selena. Actually, it’s the first time I’ve ever really sang in the movie and did my own whole album for the movie, separate from a Jennifer Lopez/JLo album.”
