Her daughter, Willow, may have taught us all how to ‘whip our hair’, but Jada Pinkett Smith has entered the big chop era of her life. In a new Instagram post, the Smiths debuted matching shaved heads, celebrating “the shed.” “Willow made me do it because it was time to let go,” The elder Smith captioned the July 12 post. “BUT… my 50’s are ‘bout to be Divinely lit with this shed.”

Willow also posted the same shot on Instagram, captioning her own post, “a gift is pure when it is given from the heart to the right person at the time and at the right place, and when we expect nothing in return.” The Smith family has always been open about dealing with their hair and constantly being versatile and switching things up.

Willow is absolutely no stranger to a shaved style, with dad Will going on record to comment on how shocked he was the first time she buzzed it all off… possibly during an early act of teenage rebellion. Willow also famously got into a box last year and shaved her hair off, so. It’s no shock her mom succumbed to peer pressure (and yes, Jada and Willow are peers as much as they are mother and daughter.)

Back in 2018, Pinkett Smith shared her past struggle with hair loss during a  chat on Red Table Talk, explaining, “It was terrifying when it first started. I was in the shower one day and had just handfuls of hair in my hands and I was just like, ‘Oh my god, am I going bald?”

“It was one of those times in my life where I was literally shaking in fear. That’s why I cut my hair, and why I continue to cut it,” she continued at the time. “My hair has been a big part of me,” Pinkett Smith added. “Taking care of my hair has been a beautiful ritual and having the choice to have hair or not. And then one day to be like, ‘Oh my god, I might not have that choice anymore.'” Despite plenty of research, experts never got to the bottom of Pinkett Smith’s hair loss — a confusion that may have also had a hand in the shaved cut. Regardless of if she wanted to twin with her daughter, trying to beat a burgeoning problem, or if she just wants to enter her fifth decade with a new look, we’re welcoming it all with wide arms.
