happiest season

In recent years, no one has been able to perfect a rom-com. No matter how hard Netflix may try, come Christmas, every single romantic comedy that’s been released in the past decade falls flat in comparison to the gems that were released in the 90s and early aughts.

Back then, we were spoiled for choice when it came to romantic comedies. Notting Hill, Never Been Kissed, 10 Things I Hate About You and Pretty Woman are all still cult classics today. As are rom-com festive editions, such as The Holiday, Love Actually and Bridget Jones, which are essential watching every holiday season, no matter how many times you’ve seen Hugh Grant door-knocking in the snow to find Natalie.

But it looks like finally, there might be a new rom-com that is – brace yourself – actually good. Not only that, but it’s focused on a lesbian couple, making it the first mainstream gay Christmas movie ever.

Happiest Season stars Kristen Stewart, Mackenzie Davis, Aubrey Plaza, Dan Levy and Alison Brie. In the film, directed by Clea DuVall, Stewart plays Abby, a woman who decides to propose to her girlfriend at Christmas, while meeting her family for the first time. Mackenzie Davis plays Stewart’s girlfriend, Harper, a woman who hasn’t yet told her conservative parents and family that she’s gay, much to the surprise of Abby.

The trailer has everything needed for the perfect rom-com recipe: drama, hilarity, and crazy family dynamics. Not to mention Levy, of Schitt’s Creek fame, who could make literally anything hilarious.

Not to speak too soon, but perhaps next year Love Actually might be replaced.

Happiest Season will release November 25.
