A lot can be said about the framework of fashion in the way someone interprets a specific dress code and style. Take for instance Hailey and Justin Bieber, who despite a loving five-year marriage and access to some of the world’s most dextrous celebrity stylists, leave the house like they never co-ordinated plans.

Though the early stages of their relationship seemed to harness a sartorial synergy that catapulted them to become one of fashion’s most in-demand ‘It’ couples—with TikTok’s resident stylist Allison Bornstein prescribing their personal styles the shared descriptions of “sporty and oversized”, with Hailey’s third word as “sexy” and Justin’s being “90s”—the couples current mode appears to dress as the anthesis of one another.

However, their latest outing could prove that their divergent dressing purely comes down to fundamental differences in how they perceive clothing or the meanings bestowed on them. Language is a fickle thing, and this recent street-style foray offers an answer to why the Biebers don’t discuss where they’re going before departing home but also suggests they don’t clarify what they mean by specific silhouettes either.

In their latest outing, the pair can be seen walking in casual, off-duty clothing while out and about in Los Angeles. The bona fide “rockstar girlfriend” wearing a graphic shirt with Frank Sinatra’s face emblazoned across it and a pleated black mini skirt. The musician, adorning a black, zip-up tracksuit jacket and athletic shorts.

However, it seems that the Biebers aligned on adding this one style to their outfits, without actually agreeing on what that style would be. You see, Hailey and Justin both looked to a form of “slipper” for their footwear choices.

While the Rhode Beauty founder looked to the trend du jour ballet flat—looking to a satin powder blue slipper from Miu Miu—Justin sported a pair of slip-on Bottega Veneta black trainers inspired by casual loungewear.

Their ensemble is very much giving: “He was a punk, she did ballet”, with the polarising slipper styles evident that while efforts have been made to coordinate looks, further discussion is required for the Biebers to slip back into an era of cohesive dressing.
