He was one of the most eligible bachelors in Hollywood, known as the eternal rake who would likely never ‘settle down’. But it all changed in 2013 when the then-50-year-old met Amal Alamuddin. Though many hearts broke at the news of his marriage to Alamuddin in 2014, it’s undeniable that the highly accomplished barrister is one seriously impressive woman, so much so that the Oscar winner himself is well aware that she may have been out of his league.
In an interview with Page Six, Clooney, 62, joked that he agreed with fans who shared this sentiment.
“I still do [think that],” he told the outlet, joking that he felt he was “punching above” his weight with Amal, 45, who has held various appointments with the UK government and the United Nations.
“Everyone would say the same thing,” he added.
The ER alum has previously revealed that there was a time when he thought marriage and a family of his own wasn’t on the cards.
“[Amal] sort of changed everything in terms of what I thought my future–my personal future–was going to be,” he told People. “I’ve always been an optimist about the world; I just wasn’t always completely optimistic about how it was going to work out personally for me. But now I am.”
After meeting at a party at his Lake Como house in 2013, Clooney divulged that he realised he wanted to spend his life with his future wife during a romantic trip to Kenya.
“We went on a safari in Kenya. Amal loves giraffes; they’re her favourite animal. She went to this place called Giraffe Manor, where the giraffes stick their heads through the windows and kiss you,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “I had a picture of her, looking back, smiling at these giraffes, and I said, ‘I think I’m going to ask her to marry me’.”
In September 2014, the couple tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at the Aman Canal Grande resort in Venice, Italy.
Together, they co-founded a human rights organisation, the Clooney Foundation for Justice, in 2016. And on June 6, 2017 the pair welcomed twins, Ella and Alexander.
