2020 has been Florence Pugh’s year. The British actress blew up on a global scale after she managed to be the most talked-about component of Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Little Women, despite the film also starring Meryl Streep, Timothee Chalamet, Saoirse Ronan, and Emma Watson.
After she nabbed her first Oscar nod for her performance as Amy March, Pugh went on to make headlines for her upcoming role in Marvel’s Black Widow and for her relationship with Scrubs star, Zac Braff. But it’s her latest project that has us wishing we were in her shoes more than ever before: a starring role alongside none other than Harry Styles in none other than Olivia Wilde’s new movie, Don’t Worry Darling.
Though little is known about the psychological thriller other than its standout cast including Styles, Pugh, Chris Pine, Gemma Chan and Kiki Layne, it has been revealed that the film is set in the 1950s and that the plot centers on Pugh and Styles’ characters’ marriage. According to Collider, Pugh will play “unhappy housewife (Alice) who slowly begins to question her own sanity when she starts to notice strange occurrences in her small, utopian community in the California desert.” Meanwhile, Styles will be her “picture-perfect husband (Jack), who loves her dearly, but is hiding a dark secret from her.”
After filming was halted last month due to someone testing positive for COVID, cast and crew have resumed their positions in Los Angeles with the first images from the set showing Pugh in a floor-length green dress waving off Styles as he gets into his convertible wearing a brown suit and holding a briefcase. Don’t Worry Darling is just Wilde’s second film after her critically-acclaimed debut, Booksmart, which got rave reviews from everyone, including former US President Barack Obama. When news of the project got out, almost every studio in Hollywood wanted to be involved, prompting a bidding war with no less than 18 different studios, streamers and financiers trying to add their name to the production.
There’s no release date as of yet, but one thing is for sure: we’ll be lining up – in socially-distanced fashion – outside the cinema when there is.
