FKA Twigs looked all sorts of fabulous onstage as part of Dua Lipa’s Studio 2054 livestream event. But I officially lost it when the “Sad Day” singer posted a close-up version of her stage makeup on Instagram following the show. The multilayered eyeliner look was bold, sparkly, and all-in-all, the perfect stage makeup to ensure that all eyes were on her.
The British are always serving super cool, editorial beauty looks courtesy of Swedish makeup artist Daniel Sallstrom. If this one looks familiar, that’s because the 32-year-old rocked a similar look on tour promoting her second studio album, Magdalene. In May 2019, she shared a photo of the glam, naming it “messy ballerina.”
Sallstrom ditched the Swarovski crystals and red pigment for the virtual concert, opting for a softer look: a brown-toned smoky eye with a touch of glitter. Instead of recreating the exact same multilayered liner from last May he added glitter to the white undereye liner. Another point of difference was that he gave her a full-coverage, glowy base, instead of embracing her natural, freckled skin.
The finished result is the real-life equivalent of an Instagram filter because it makes the performer’s eyes look so much bigger onstage.” I wanted the makeup to make an impact wherever you were in the audience,” said the makeup artist in a makeup tutorial about the look.
Twigs and Sallstrom met nearly a decade ago, in 2012. “The first time I met Twigs I wasn’t doing her makeup, I was modeling in drag,” Sällström said in an interview. His drag makeup skills are ever-present in Twigs’ exquisite looks. “It’s a lot of classical stage tricks with this makeup,” he adds, explaining that “stage makeup is different from any other kind of makeup.” Hit play on the video below to see Twigs recreate the OG look on her own.
