Earlier this week, Emma Watson returned to the red carpet for the first time in what feels like forever, reminding us all that sustainability can be sexy (and very stylish) in a white tulle gown by Harris Reed, upcycled from second-hand bridal dresses from Oxfam. Now, the British actress has blessed us with yet another fashion moment, this time showing off her toned torso in a crop top-esque design—very ‘90s, very Y2K, very Dua Lipa—with a difference.
Instead of opting for denim butterfly tops with jeans, like Lipa is want to do, Watson made the crop top—and underboob—trends elegant by enlisting London-based designer Emilia Wickstead to create her a custom-made two-piece for a meeting with “one of her idols”, Al Gore.
As Watson noted on Instagram, the green floral separates were made using leftover fabrics from Wickstead’s Resort 2022 collection, which included 62 per cent recycled yarn that was woven and printed in Italy. “Thank you to the loveliest Emilia for making me this beautiful custom piece… I will be wearing this a lot!!,” Watson wrote.
The meeting with Gore, whose 2006 documentary An Inconvenient Truth made many realize the harsh realities of climate change, was clearly a bucket list moment for Watson, who also posted a photo of herself lying on the floor at the meeting, captioned: “I died”.
“It was really surreal to meet and interview one of my idols,” Watson continued. “I think one of the many reasons I find Al Gore so compelling is that… he has continued to do the work he set out to do… Thankfully climate change action is becoming mainstream and the tides have turned in his direction and now we are all swimming with him. Em xx”
An Emma Watson eco-fashion return was something I didn’t even know I needed to see out the pandemic. Maybe the Earth is healing, after all—or it will be, anyway, if we follow her and Gore’s lead. A Hot Vax Eco Summer, anyone?
