December 23, 2020, 8:30 am: It’s a sleepy, snowy Wednesday in Manhattan, and it’s the day before Christmas Eve—Christmas Eve-Eve, if you will. Few things are getting me out of bed, so I check my inbox to create the illusion of productivity. But, to my surprise, I have an email from The House of Dior with a link to the luxury French label’s new Dior Tales podcast featuring stories written by Cordelia de Castellane, creative director of Baby Dior, presented in English and French.
Still tucked under the covers, I hit “play” on the first podcast episode titled “The Kingdom of Christian Dior” and let my baby (corgi) into bed so we could experience the first chapter of the French couturier’s magical life. For eight minutes, I sat captivated by Castellane’s soothing voice, entirely convinced that this content has the same anti-anxiety benefits of a lengthy meditation session.
The first episode begins by introducing Dior’s mother, Madeleine, who gives birth to Christian on a frigid day in January of 1905. Without giving the whole tale away, listeners are transported to an enchanting, fairytale-like world inspired by the designer’s childhood. Through grandiose hyperbole and the personification of nature, Castellane offers a look at Dior’s life and his creative superpowers—and successfully leaves us wanting more.
“Paris was a canvas on which his fingers delicately dispensed color from his tiny pockets.”
Hit play on the audio below to listen to the first episode of the Dior Tales podcast. Adults can tune in to this website or the Apple Podcast app with their children and/or pets every day through December 25.
