May 26, 2021: I’m sure by now you know that Gucci is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. To commemorate the momentous occasion, creative director Alessandro Michele teamed up with (er, hacked?) Balenciaga for his highly anticipated Gucci Aria show this past April and announced that the fashion house will present its next collection in Los Angeles. Now, the designer’s introduced Gucci Garden Archetypes, an immersive multimedia experience exploring and celebrating the House’s creative vision and campaigns throughout the years.

The Florence-based installation opened its doors on May 14, but it’s also available for fashion aficionados across the globe to experience virtually. To bring the digital experience to life, the luxury Italian label partnered with the online gaming platform and creation system Roblox. Better yet, they can also shop in-game merch, including a mix of bags, sunglasses, and other accessories for their avatars, (not their real-life selves). Take note, though, the digital version of the exhibition is available for just two weeks, ending on May 31. Click here to dive into the digital experience.

A week into the event, on May 19 to be exact, Gucci’s digital Dionysus Bag With Bee became a hot commodity. Prices reached unthinkable heights, with one seller listing it for one million Robux (Roblox’s in-game currency). Although the high-ticket bag still sits untouched, one buyer snagged it for 350,000 Robux (AKA $4,375 USD). For comparison, the physical version of the bag retails for less, at $3,400. Although the iconic bag is no longer available from Gucci’s official site, it is, however, available on several resale websites for even less.

Mind you, this isn’t an NFT like the digital pregnant Birken that sold for $24,000 last week, averaging the same price as a physical one. NFT is the acronym for a non-fungible token, awarded to original digital pieces, with most hype being around art right now. NFTs hold value and can be appraised and resold at any time by the owner. In the case of the digital Gucci bags, these are merely pixelated accessories that users can only use within the Roblox platform.

The Gucci Dionysus Bag went live for gamers to shop for a single hour on May 17 and 18 where buyers quickly snapped them up for their original 475 Robux (about $6 in USD), which is probably the least expensive thing with the Gucci logo you can get. Once the initial two-day sale ended, Roblox scalpers who were lucky enough to claim one of these limited digital bags took to the secondhand market listing the bags at inflated prices resulting in high demand for the coveted Gucci bag.

A new concept for most of us, it may sound ridiculous to drop this amount of money, especially when you can get the IRL version for nearly $1,000 less. However, if you are in the market for your very own Roblox Dionysus Bag With Bee, prices have now dropped down to a more reasonable 53,214 Robux, or about $665. You in?
