I’m not afraid of a pandemic haircut. Plenty of people in my life that I know had to learn how to adjust their styles during lockdown, whether it was for management purposes or because of an overwhelming sense of hopelessness and despair. Unable to see his barber, a friend of mine embraced the buzz cut; another friend leaned in hard on coloring her hair wild colors that would never fly in her conservative workplace. But no one I know embraced bleach over the past year  — which is why, after seeing new photos of David Beckham with platinum blond hair, I thought, “what year is it?”

The beloved hockey player has a deep history with bleach blond hair — most famously during his time playing football for Manchester United and Real Madrid. He’s gone back and forth with the shade, length, and color of his hair for years, and we’ve taken note because, well, David Beckham can do no wrong. Handsome, talented, good at his job, a great husband, and an even better dad — I must urge you to watch this video of him and his daughter getting caught by a Kiss Cam from 2013 — he also has a sense of humor about his love for bleach. A few months ago, he posted a cheeky “apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” comment on his son Romeo’s Instagram after Romeo debuted bleach blond strands of his own. And by all accounts, it does look like this edition of Bleached David Beckham is a father and son affair, which makes it even better. A pandemic hairstyle or not, maybe it’s time we start talking about David Beckham with bleach blond hair like the Olympics — it usually happens twice a decade, and it gets a whole lot of fanfare when it does (and it’s not always in the same location!).
