If you’re anything like me, you’ll be a slave to your Instagram Saved folder. It’s quickly replaced Pinterest as my go-to source of inspiration, a digital stash of images and videos that inform everything from the way I dress, to my home interior styling, my next nail color or my makeup looks. However for the latter, unless the original post that I’ve saved details which beauty products have been used, it can be virtually impossible to pinpoint the exact shade I’m after – that is, until Chanel recently made it very virtually possible via their new Lipscanner app.

The house’s innovative new technology allows the user to find a perfect lipstick match for any color, whether it’s a shot of a celebrity or a particularly pretty bunch of blooms. You can even use it to scan your clothes, a poster on the street or the pages of your favorite fashion magazine (GRAZIA, obviously) and find a corresponding Chanel lipstick shade. From there, the app will recommend a hue and product, which you can virtually apply to your lips to see how it looks.

You can also pick the shade and finish you’re after, with Chanel’s Lipscanner also supplying a direct link to shop your recommended shade. It’s a simple, extremely convenient solution to a common predicament, but the AI software is cutting edge and extremely accurate, analyzing the color right down to the nearest pixel, while also detecting the texture and finish of the product in question.

The exclusive technology took Chanel months to design and create as part of a collaboration between the French label’s Connected Experience Lab and the Chanel Makeup Creation Studio. The team trained the color scanner based on tens of thousands of facial images, and will use it for future makeup releases.

Not only does it work, it’s also surprisingly gratifying. So if you’re in the market for a new lipstick shade, swipe on over to the app store and download Chanel’s Lipscanner – you’ll never need to swatch aimlessly in store again.
