Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel once said, “If you’re sad, add more lipstick and attack.” Makeup, while often perceived as frivolous, is in fact the chosen armour for so many, and few items possess more power than the lipstick. It might be a slick of cherry red on Saturday night or a fresh nude that makes your skin tone shine – whatever it is, the effects can be transformative.

Gabrielle Chanel is a woman who has harnessed this power and turned it into art. Take Chanel Pirate – a deep red hue so iconic, it exists on a “shade name” only basis (and No.5 proves this isn’t an isolated event). In May, the house ushered in 12 new icons – a shade expansion of the revered Coco Rouge Flash lipstick collection.

The lipstick is light and balmy, melting onto lips and leaving a wash of high gloss colour in its wake. A blend of mimosa, jojoba and sunflower oils mean it’s supremely hydrating, whilst light-reflective pigments prove the perfect balance of colour and sheen. The shade range itself is varied and bold: deep plums, poppy pinks, creamy nudes and a sports car red so shiny, you can see your own reflection.

Housed in a glass-like bullet that captures the light just so, it’s proof that – while lipstick can’t solve all our problems – it can absolutely spark joy.
