Just as the fashion sect began to peel their eyes
away from New York and
onto London for the English capital’s respective fashion week, the
Council of Fashion Designers of America have given us a reason to
keep our attention firm on their cultural epicentre.
Released today, the CFDA have announced the honorees
and nominees for this year’s CFDA Fashion Awards—a ceremony
globally amplifying the impact and excellence of America’s domestic
fashion industry.
The 2023 year of the ceremony will take place on
November 6 on the Upper West Side at the American Museum of Natural
History. It’s not quite the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, though just a
stone’s throw across Central Park, America’s brightest emerging and
established designers will gather with esteemed members of the
press and a portion of the local celebrity style set.
This year’s proceeding marks the first for new
incumbent chairperson, Thom Browne, who took over from Tom
Ford effective of January 1st 2023. This year’s host is yet to
be announced.
The recipients and honorees range from fashion
mainstays to buzz-worthy bourgeoning designers who hold their own
in the fast-paced and ferocious industry.
Proving that fashion is heading towards a more co-ed
temperament, male designers have led the nominations for the
‘American Womenswear Designer of the Year’ category.
Joseph Altuzarra, Christopher John Rogers and Rual Lopez (of
Luar) have each received a nomination, going up against Khaite’s
Catherine Holstein and Tory Burch for the accolade. A competitive
category no doubt.
In the ‘Menswear Designer of the Year’ category,
emerging designers like Willy Chavarria and Colm Dillane of
KidSuper lead the charge against revered talents, with Thom
Brown the only designer to have been designing for their
nominated brands for at least a decade.
The most decorated honor, the ‘Founder’s Award in
Honor of Eleanor Lambert’ will be bestowed upon Tom Ford
chairperson Domenico De Sole.
Given that most nominees will attend the ceremony
with a respective muse in tow, the evening is sure to be an
explosion of textures, tones, references and silhouettes: a true
reflection of the state of the American textile industry.
Excitingly, the evening could also promise a rare
sighting from the Olsen Twins, with Mary-Kate and
Ashley nominated for the ‘Accessory Designer of the Year’ award
with their resolutely minimal label The
Row. But until that night arrives, keep scrolling ahead for the
full CFDA Fashion Award nominations in full.
