celine fall 2021

“My youth has been nothing but a tenebrous storm, pierced now and then by rays of brilliant sunshine,” read a Charles Baudelaire quote that appeared in the show notes of Celine’s Fall 2021 collection, which was revealed this morning. The French fashion house’s creative director, Hedi Slimane, has long been fascinated by the teenage years—and the new season was no exception.

Staged in the grand 17th century André Le Nôtre-designed gardens of the Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte (the very first jardin à la française), the new season was not filled with the over-the-top glamour one might expect from an estate that inspired the formal landscaping of Versailles, but rather the types of ensembles that often show up on the streets of Paris. Blazers were paired with jeans and cowboy boots; crop tops peaked out from under hoodies and trench coats; glittery sweatpants added a glam edge to puffer jackets—all to the tune of “Un Daydream,” an original song created for the occasion by the Paris-based artist Regina Demina. In other words: classic pieces sure to stand the test of time, as well as numbers that will make the hearts (and feeds) of Instagram’s It girls sing.
