Remember those love-them-or-hate-them capri pants tucked away in the back of your closet? Well, dust them off, because capris are officially back in style, and February Fashion Week street style is living proof.
Capri pants, named after the idyllic Italian island of Capri, have a long and fascinating history. They were first created in the late 1940s by German designer Sonja de Lennart, who launched a collection called “Capri” featuring various pieces inspired by the island’s laid-back lifestyle. This collection included the now-iconic capri pants.
However, the popularity of capris has fluctuated over the decades. The 1980s saw a resurgence with a more relaxed, mom-jean style, while the early 2000s ushered in the era of the low-rise, ultra-cropped capris. This iteration wasn’t universally loved, and capris faded from the mainstream for a while.
But fashion, as it tends to do, is cyclical, and capris are experiencing a revival. February Fashion Week street style was awash with new takes on the trend. We saw a return to the more classic, mid-calf length, often in tailored silhouettes reminiscent of the 1950s, as well as early 2000s throwbacks to low-rise silos.
With their comfortable and stylish silhouette, capris are poised to be a staple for the upcoming season. So, dig out your favorite pair, or keep an eye out for a fresh update, and join the fashion set in embracing this timeless trend.
