Personal trainer, model, and aspiring actor Sam Asghari, 28, has been linked to pop star Britney Spears, 40, since 2016, having met while filming the music video to her song “Slumber Party.” Engaged since September of last year, the couple has already seen their fair share of ups and downs. After fighting to end Spears’ conservatorship, the pair announced their pregnancy in April. A month later, they updated fans that Spears suffered a miscarriage. In a new, rare interview with GQ, Asghari opens up about his engagement to Spears, and what lies ahead.
After the news of the couple’s recent miscarriage, Asghari told GQ of his hopes of “being a young father” and the difficulties of loss. “It’s something that happens to a lot of people. And one beautiful thing that I heard was when the baby’s ready, it’ll come. So that was a beautiful thing somebody had said was, it’s a common process and the female body is just so amazing, and just the human body in general is so beautiful that it heals itself. And that when the baby’s ready it’ll be the right time.”
But he can’t wait to be a dad one day. “Fatherhood is something I have always looked forward to and I don’t take it lightly,” he shared. “It is the most important job I will ever do.”
He also opened up about what his day-to-day life is like with the superstar singer, clarifying that he’s “not a house husband” and doesn’t have a joint account with his fiancée.
“I’m a normal person. So I do a lot of shopping because sometimes I require specific things when it comes to diet.” He also said he’s “careful” with his money “to build a future for my children. If you came to this country, you came with a purpose. You don’t come here to goof around.” (Asghari moved to the US from Iran in the summer of 2006 when he was 12.)
One thing Asghari did splurge on was Spears’ stunning engagement ring.
“I figured with her taste, she wouldn’t want something super big and super celebrity. Celebrities get that million-dollar ring. And usually, it’s free because it’s for promotion, but I want it to represent something. I want it to come from my heart and I want it to go to someone that wasn’t a big jeweler. It was a big company, but it was a company that was willing to do it the way that I wanted it,” he said of the jeweler, Forever Diamonds NY.
“So, I designed a really beautiful ring,” he said. “It’s a princess cut, for a real life princess.”
He even had engraved “Lioness” on the inside of the ring — a nickname Asghari has for his fiancée. When describing the female lion, he says, “She’s very strong and she was very independent. And lioness was a beautiful name that just came to me out of nowhere. So it’s kind of a nickname, but I don’t call her that every day. It was kind of like a symbol.”
When he popped the question at home with Spears he decided to keep it just between the two of them. While he wished to get permission from her family or more specifically, her children with whom she shares with ex-husband Kevin Federline, Sean Preston, 16, and Jayden James, 15, Asghari ultimately decided against it.
“I didn’t tell anybody to be honest with you,” Asghari said. “I didn’t want anybody to know and anybody to interfere in any way whatsoever so it was between me and her.”
