Listen, no one more than me is thirsting for the warm embrace of fall after this brutal, cruel summer. It’s too hot out in these streets, y’all, and I am tired. Cold climates just work better for me. Sweaters, coziness, fireplaces, and of course, a change in hair color. A seasonal change typically begets a personal one, and if you find that’s you, you’re in the right place. After spending the summer in the sun, many people are looking to restore their natural shine, radiance, and overall hair health. The summer also tends to lighten and brighten most hair colors, so fall is a great time to add some depth back into your locks for rich, luxuriousness.

If you’re in the mood for some great fall hair color inspo, we talked to Vickie Vidov, celebrity hairstylist and founder of New York City’s Vidov West and Sunnie Brook, Biolage global ambassador and celebrity stylist to get to the root (pun intended) of what’s coming this autumn.

Espresso and Mocha Brunette

“When the seasons change, especially from summer to fall, you have your clients craving change. At this time, we are all reaching for a little color in our lives to make ourselves feel happy and this fall, I am really feeling we are heading more towards muted tones and very natural highlighting — much more blended, almost looking like an all-over color,” says Vidov. We’re especially loving the gorgeous balayage of the blends of mocha and espresso for a fall hair color option.

“In the fall, as a hair colorist, I often take my clients into the richer tones that give their hair this radiance — warm brunettes in rich chocolate or espresso tones,” shares Brook. “Even if it’s only a few intentionally placed low lights to bring depth into their color.”

Cream Soda

For blondes, Brook likes to lean into hazelnut or buttery tones depending on their eye color: “One of my favorites is a color I like to call ‘cream soda’,” she explains. “This can take a one-dimensional color and upgrade it to the next level.”

Beigeiana Gronde

“We are going away from the drastic contrast, toned down not to compete with your clothing color choice,” explains Vidov. “I was in Sicily and looking at the beautiful tones in all the rocks that naturally take on their own tones and colors.” She found herself incredibly inspired with the muted shades or light browns, and sandy greys of the environment, the natural tones created by nature. For fall blondes, she shared that “in a nutshell, highlights will be muted and blended: more sandy blondes, and mushroom browns, earthy colors.”

Copper & Cinnamon

Both Vidov and Brook expect to see a big burst of fall colors — deeper corals, magenta reds, deep tones — not only on the leaves but on our heads too, in the coming months. “This particular season, I’ll be playing with the warmer tones as the copper family is such a desirable color right now, and it can be worn by almost anyone,” says Brook, who will be using Biolage ColorBalm to create and maintain warm cinnamons and copper that give the complexion a rosy glow.
