I admit it: my fashion preferences are heavily influenced by my Instagram feed, combined with trends set on the world’s biggest and most important runways. This winter, one of the popular sweater styles I’m embracing until further notice is the cardigan. The knitted garment works for every season and just so happens to be one of the *it* styles of the moment on social media. Worn by everyone from Spanish model, Blanca Padilla, to Kendall Jenner and set in song thanks to Taylor Swift, it’s a staple that we expect to ramp up in demand even more in 2021.
Unsurprisingly, knits and cardigans have also dominated the catwalk, both for Fall-Winter 2020/2021 and Spring-Summer 2021. One of the most popular ways in which we’ve seen them on the runway is styled with matching coordinates. The trend is similar to the elevated monochromatic sweatsuit trend that’s exploded in popularity as many of us continue to work from home, trying to look put together without sacrificing comfort. Perhaps the cardigan paired with a matching-colored silhouette is the perfect way to segue out of the sweatsuits when life goes back to “normal.”
One of the many amazing things about cardigans is that they’re super versatile. Take Katie Holmes’ famous viral cashmere cardigan set from Khaite, for instance. The actress was photographed in that internet-famous outfit while hailing a taxi in New York City in August. You can make an even stronger case for wearing that adorable combo at home during the winter months. Wear the knit bra around the house and throw the cardigan over it for Zoom calls, and voilà—chic!
