In late-2020, the namesake biopic Audrey hit the small screen by way of paid streaming, DVD and Blu-ray. The documentary was celebrated for allowing an intimate look into Audrey Hepburn‘s time in the limelight and dug deeper than any filmmaker has done before. Now, the highly-anticipated film is making its way to Netflix.
Directed by Helena Coan (also behind the film Chasing Perfect), viewers are taken behind-the-scenes into Hepburn’s love of dance. Coan has partnered with the Royal Ballet’s Wayne McGregor to choreograph dance-based “portraits” of the Oscar-winning actress.
“The film provides intimate interviews with those who knew her best, woven around rare archival footage,” said director Coan in a press release. “However, we have taken it one step further and worked with multi-award-winning British choreographer, Wayne McGregor CBE, to create dance sequences inspired by Audrey’s love of ballet, building a beguiling and emotionally affecting portrait of Audrey.
“Dance magnifies Audrey’s emotional landscape and brings a heightened sense of drama and theatre to the film, as well as a rich visual language which has not yet been used in documentary.”
The documentary also features interviews from the Breakfast at Tiffany’s star’s closest circle. Her son, Sean Hepburn Ferrer, reveals details from Hepburn’s tumultuous childhood as she suffered from malnutrition while living under the Nazi regime in Holland. Other special guests include former Givenchy artistic director Clare Waight Keller and Tiffany & Co. designer director emeritus John Loring.
Hepburn is played by Francesca Hayward during her years in Hollywood, while Alessandra Ferri plays Hepburn in her older years and Keira Moore fronts a “Young Audrey.”
“The Audrey that we know and that we see on-screen and the photographs, they were all sort of planned and everything had to be very carefully crafted, in terms of the image that she put forward to the world,” Emma Ferrer, Hepburn’s granddaughter, told BAZAAR.com in January.
Audrey will arrive on Netflix on March 14. Watch the trailer below.
