Art Basel Miami 2021 may be over—and fun in the sun, right along with it—but we are still processing some of the standout shows, art and fair booths that absolutely captivated us. Yes, we’ve come to associate the week long Miami affair with parties (fabulous ones at that), fashion shows and brand activations, but at the core—Art Basel is all about art! Dealers, gallerist, artist, arts writers and art aficionados, come from all corners of the globe to get a taste of the $50 Billion+ contemporary art market. From more blue-chip galleries and established artist, to new galleries and emerging artist, Art Basel Miami represents the full breadth of the art world. For the week (and then some), art galleries and dealers take over the whole city, exhibiting booths at the main hall, satellite-roving galleries throughout the city, private estates, boutiques etc. Now what exactly is Art Basel you ask? Art Basel is the leading global platform connecting collectors, galleries, and artists with fairs in Basel, Hong Kong, and Miami Beach.

This year, there were a lot of stellar booths and showings. In particular NADA (The New Art Dealers Alliance), was full of some of the most dynamic, informative work around. From Chela Mitchell Gallery’s historic first showing—Chela Mitchell gallery is the first Black-owned, first women-led and first gallery from D.C. to show at the fair—to artist Melissa Joseph’s impressive booth of needle felted work—which explored her bicultural identity. This years’ offerings were quite indicative of the global arts world, with an incredibly diverse pool of POC artists, Women artists of color, queer artists, and Black and Brown art gallerist. As more and more artists, dealers and writers of color continue to break ceilings and push for a more equitable art market, this years’ Art Basel Miami was a great push towards that.
