Danish researchers have found that a substance in pomegranates can enhance memory by eliminating damaged mitochondria. Vilhelm Bohr, a professor at the University of Copenhagen, explains that many people with neurodegenerative diseases suffer from mitochondrial dysfunction. Their brains struggle to clear weak mitochondria, which leads to impaired cognitive functions.

Tests on mice showed that urolithin A, a substance in pomegranates, strawberries, and walnuts, can mitigate Alzheimer’s symptoms. Researchers published their findings in the journal Alzheimer’s Association, noting, “Urolithin A alleviates memory problems and other dementia consequences. Although tested on mice, the outlook is positive.”

They’re still working on the optimal dosage, and urolithin A is also available in pill form. However, one pomegranate a day might not be enough to see benefits.
