Red carpets and awards ceremonies look a little different these days — think cardboard cut-outs of Beyoncé and Jay Z in the front row instead of the real thing. Yes, in lieu of celebrities gathering inside one grand ballroom — and without the candid political pontificating surrounding Trump during acceptance speeches or the unlimited alcohol seeing movies stars becoming bleary-eyed — all we have left is the fashion.

So here we are. Welcome to the socially distanced red carpet that is the 2020 American Music Awards held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

Here, GRAZIA’s editorial director Jessica Bailey and contributing editors Grace O’Neill and Isabelle Truman weigh in on their favorite —and… not so favorite — looks from the red carpet.

Jennifer Lopez in Balmain

“Hair stylist Chris Appleton loves pairing a wet look with a sequinned Balmain and while you can achieve the hairstyle yourself here, Google tells me all anybody is really interested in is Lopez’s body. Take a deeper dive into her exercise regime here. (Warning: she doesn’t drink coffee and alcohol.)” – Jessica Bailey, editorial director

“With that body and face, it’s hard to go wrong. I’m especially obsessed with JLo’s beauty look tonight, but the sparkles are very AMAs, too” – Isabelle Truman, contributing editor

“This woman seems to get better every year, this is flawless.” – Grace O’Neill, contributing editor

Dua Lipa in Versace

“Just as these seashells are the star of the Versace season, Dua Lipa is having her moment in the music industry. I do wonder if this dress would support a high-kick to the tune of ‘Physical’ though, specifically to its lyrics ‘I don’t want to live another life/because this one’s pretty nice’. Pretty nice, indeed.” – Jessica Bailey, editorial director

“This dress is so perfect for Dua and for the occasion, she looks incredible” – Isabelle Truman, contributing editor

“Further proof that Dua Lipa x Versace is a flawless combination.” – Grace O’Neill, contributing editor

Katy Perry in double denim

“Anybody else just get transported back to that infamous denim-on-denim-on-denim moment that was Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake at the 2011 American Music Awards? Same.” – Jessica Bailey, editorial director

“Such an unexpected look from Katy, but I am obsessed with it. It’s the perfect night to go against the sparkly grain and wear something more fashion-forward. The shoes are perfect, too” – Isabelle Truman, contributing editor

“This is the perfect look for Katy Perry—so fresh and modern. Love the shoes.” – Grace O’Neill, contributing editor

Taraji P Henson in Giorgio Armani

“Stylist Jason Bolden has really shot Cookie from Empire into a whole new sartorial stratosphere. This is my favorite look of Taraji’s huge wardrobe this evening – and I’m beyond thrilled the AMAs chose this woman to host this year.” – Jessica Bailey, editorial director

“Taraji looks incredibly chic in this Giorgio Armani mini dress. The headpiece and her silver beauty look makes her outfit look fun and young, which is perfect for this event” – Isabelle Truman, contributing editor

“The beaded detailing on this dress is truly magnificent, and I can’t think of anyone who’d look better in it than Taraji. 10s across the board.” – Grace O’Neill, contributing editor

Cara Delevingne in Dolce & Gabbana

“Grace and Isabelle will talk about this metallic moment until next week but for me, Cara’s lavender eye and coral lip, a la Debbie Harry, is what sets the suit alight. See a breakdown of the beauty look here.” – Jessica Bailey, editorial director

“I love a power suit red carpet moment, especially when it’s one as bold as this. I’m not such a fan of Cara’s beauty look, but with that face you can pull almost anything off.” – Isabelle Truman, contributing editor

“Cara Delevingne has proven time and time again that she rocks a tailored suit like no one else. I have to disagree with Izzy here, I love the beauty look! It brings the look up a notch for me.” – Grace O’Neill, contributing editor

Tayshia Adams in Balmain

“This is a very safe option. While Tayshia is so incredibly beautiful, as the AMAs is the rowdier, fancy-free sister to more pompous awards shows, I would have liked a loan from Olivier to be something a little more spectacular.” – Jessica Bailey, editorial director

“A very tasteful – and perfect for the night – look from this year’s US Bachelorette” – Isabelle Truman, contributing editor

Laverne Cox in Michael Costello

“If there’s any event to wear a waist-high split, it’s the AMAs. Laverne Cox could not look more sexy in this custom Michael Costello.” – Isabelle Truman, contributing editor

“Angelina Jolie whom?” – Grace O’Neill, contributing editor

Paris Hilton Valdrin Sahiti

“Another sparkly dress! But it works, especially showing off Paris’ incredible legs. Pulling her hair back into this slick ponytail offsets the ‘sexy’ in a cool way, too.” – Isabelle Truman, contributing editor

“Paris Hilton is playing it safe here, but she still looks a million dollars.” – Grace O’Neill, contributing editor
