Another awards show kicked off today: the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards. And much like the previous awards ceremonies of 2020, this year’s Emmys also looks a little different: it was virtual. Peculiarities included custom-made Hazmat tuxedos, designer pajamas and video calls to winners, who were asked to “come as you are but make an effort.” A leaked letter to nominees even revealed: “If you’re in the UK and it’s 3am, perhaps you want to be in designer pajamas and record from your bed!”

But for those not in the UK cuddled up in jammies like Jameela Jamil, the Emmys glamour stakes were high. From Yara Shahidi’s spectacular plume-plucked sequinned Prada dress to Tracee Ellis Ross’s gilt lamé delight, the fashion was all kinds of glorious. First-time winner, Zendaya, was arguably winner of the night, first fronting our (social media) screens in incredible Christopher John Rogers before changing into an equally incredible custom Giorgio Armani gown, both looks accented by brilliant Bulgari diamonds.

Below, a look at some of the best fashion thus far from yet another strange awards night.

And now for the look you’ve been waiting for… it’s actor Billy Porter (@theebillyporter), a dynamic force. He made history last year as the first openly gay Black man to win best lead actor in a drama at the Emmy Awards. This year, he’s been nominated again for his work as the character Pray Tell on the TV show “Pose.” ⁣ ⁣ “Never in a million years, as a gay Black man who came out in the 80s during the AIDS crisis, did I imagine that a show like ‘Pose’ and a character like Pray Tell could exist,” says Billy, who is known to make a statement through perspective and style. ⁣ ⁣ “I would describe my style as free. I’ve worked a long time to find a space where I don’t care what other people think about me. That’s a real interesting and hard place to get to,” says Billy. “I’m there. I’m free.” ⁣ ⁣ Cheer on Billy and the other amazing nominees at the 72nd Annual Emmy Awards (@televisionacad). ⁣ ⁣ Photo of @theebillyporter by @luckychurch
