Adele is usually the one sending us into fits of tears through her emotional music, but in her most recent TV concert special the audience, made up of the likes of Emma Watson, Emma Thompson, Samuel L. Jackson, Daniel Kaluuya, Dua Lipa and Stormzy, were able to flip the narrative, reuniting the singer reunion with a person she hadn’t seen in over 20 years.

During a pause in her performance, Emma Thompson asked Adele if she had someone who inspired her growing up. “I had a teacher at Chestnut Grove, that was Miss McDonald,” Adele replied. “She got me into English literature, but she also did dance. She was just so bloody cool, so engaging, and she really made us care.”

“Funny that,” Thompson started, before Adele, realizing what was happening, interjected, “Is she here?!” Miss McDonald then walked onto the stage, sending Adele into fits of tears. The pair hugged and Miss McDonald can be heard telling her former student how proud she is of her. “Mum, can you believe it?” Adele said to the crowd, noting her mum was in the audience.

The singer then promised to get Miss McDonald’s information so that they could keep in touch. “I’ve still got my books, you know?” she said after one last hug onstage. “I’ve got all my books from when you were my teacher.”

The camera then panned around showing a teary audience, including Dua Lipa. Adele then noted she needed to get her makeup touched up before returning to the show, making the audience laugh. She then literally paused her performance to get her makeup touched up, asking her friend Alan Carr to get on stage and speak for five minutes, before surprising him by making him sing a song.
