People who can fall asleep quickly don’t know how lucky they are. Indeed, many spend entire half-hours trying to succumb to sleep.
According to a Get Laid Beds survey, one in five people in the UK takes up to two or three hours to fall asleep once in bed.
Those who have the habit of reading before bedtime tend to fall asleep quickly and have quality sleep – reveals the same research.
Get Laid Beds then asked a sleep expert, Dr. Daisy Mae, which techniques work to be able to sleep quickly – and well.
**Struggling to Fall Asleep? 4 Common Mistakes**
There isn’t a single reason behind these different timings, so techniques to fall asleep faster usually focus on reducing stress before going to bed and inducing a calm and relaxed mental and physical state.
But there are some psychological tricks that yield excellent results and allow you to fall asleep quickly.
3 Tricks to Fall Asleep Quickly
Force Yourself to Stay Awake
There is a term to describe this psychological technique: “paradoxical intention.” In practice, you simply have to lie comfortably in bed and, with your eyes open, repeat to yourself “Don’t sleep” or “I’m not falling asleep.” Your eyelids will start to feel heavy, and you’ll fall asleep in no time. Try it to believe it.
The 4-7-8 Method
To do this exercise, you have to place your tongue on the upper palate, just behind your teeth. After that, exhale the air from your mouth. Then close your mouth, inhale through your nose for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 7 seconds, and exhale through your mouth (still with your tongue on the upper palate) for 8 seconds. Repeat the entire process until you fall asleep.
Reflect on Your Day… In Reverse
Once in bed, go through your entire day starting from that moment and going backward. You brushed your teeth, put on pajamas, watched a movie, had dinner, took the tram home, and so on until waking up. This effort will free your mind from any thoughts or worries, leading you to well-deserved sleep.
