We’ve been obsessed with the icon, Andie MacDowell for several decades now. Whether it’s acting in classics like Groundhog Day and Four Weddings and a Funeral or her work as L’Oreal spokeswoman.
And naturally, we’re all wondering how she stays looking so fit and youthful at age 68. So we looked into it and this is what she’s said…
Weight Training
Speaking to InStyle last year, Andie shares that she is “addicted to weights.”
“It’s really what you need to do as you’re aging,” she explained. “We’re all going in and having our bone density checked. But you can improve your bone density … So I jump up and down, and I do a lot of weight work.”
Strength training is especially important for women during and after perimenopause as estrogen helps protect bone density and its decline during the menopause weakens bones. This can cause them to be brittle and prone to breakage. Regular resistance training and weight-bearing exercise can help maintain bone strength.
Andie explained that her weight training has brought her additional benefits too: “I have a great bottom. When I squeeze it… it’s unbelievable what I have accomplished by working out. And my arms are strong, everything’s strong.”
Yoga
Andie has spoken a lot about her love of yoga over the years, most recently telling Harper’s Bazaar that it keeps her young.
“I love to exercise. I get off on it, I really do; the endorphins get going,” she explained. “I do yoga on my own, too — I got very good at that during Covid. I used to always have to go to a class; now I’m extremely disciplined — I do yoga on my lunch breaks.”
She’s spoken about doing Bikram yoga in the past which is a type of hot yoga with fixed positions in the same order every time. But now she said she’s “learning how to do gentle yoga and to be comfortable with that,” she told Yahoo Life. “I just mean doing a flow that suits my body, listening to what my body says to do.”
Walking and Hiking
Walking and hiking are both part of Andie’s routine and have done for years — so much so that she’s mentioned it in countless interviews.
In the Yahoo interview, for example, she said: “I love to walk. Right now, it’s a little uncomfortable, which breaks my heart, because my favorite thing to do is walk. I’m an avid hiker and walker. I love exercise.” This comes as she was struggling with a torn labrum in her hip.
Walking is a great exercise for your body — it’s been shown to boost your heart health, to build lower body strength and contribute to longevity too.
