Some proponents go further, suggesting this simple habit can address a wide range of health problems. A central tenet of the practice holds that cold water is harmful because it supposedly causes fats and oils in food to harden inside the digestive tract, slowing digestion and eventually leading to illness. It is an intuitive-sounding claim – but does it hold up?

Cold water does lower the temperature of your digestive tract and can increase blood pressure in some people. However, it does not cause fat to solidify in your digestive tract. The mechanism that believers cite is, at present, not supported by evidence. So while the ritual itself is harmless and possibly beneficial, the specific reasoning behind the cold-water warning deserves a closer look before you toss every ice cube in your freezer.

Where hydration genuinely helps – and where the evidence stops

Strip away the folklore and you are left with a core truth that no one disputes: adequate hydration matters. Drinking enough water supports optimal brain function, sustained energy levels, and helps regulate both body temperature and blood pressure. Staying well-hydrated can also help prevent constipation, headaches, and kidney stones. These are well-documented benefits that apply whether you follow a structured ritual or simply sip throughout the day.

Drinking more water can also help treat constipation and high blood pressure. Yet there is no evidence that increased water intake is effective in treating type 2 diabetes or cancer. The leap from general hydration benefits to cure-all claims is where the therapy loses scientific footing.

There is another practical upside worth noting. If you replace sugary drinks like juice or soda with water, your calorie intake will decrease – potentially by as much as several hundred calories per day. That is a meaningful shift, especially over weeks and months, and it requires no special protocol, just a swap.

As for the therapy’s signature promise – that it cleans your intestines and helps regulate gut health – there is currently no research to confirm this. Drinking water does have an impact on the balance of gut bacteria, but that impact is much smaller than other factors such as diet. In other words, what you eat still matters far more than when or how you drink your water.

The risks you should actually pay attention to

Most people get enough water simply by drinking to satisfy their thirst. If you are very active, work outdoors, or live in a hot climate, you may need to drink more. But the idea that flooding your system with water first thing in the morning is universally beneficial comes with a genuine caveat: hyponatremia.

Hyponatremia is a serious condition in which sodium levels in the blood drop dangerously low, and it can lead to death. This rarely happens in healthy people whose kidneys quickly remove excess water from the blood. However, people with kidney problems, endurance athletes, and those who abuse stimulants and drink too much water are at real risk. To be safe, do not drink more than about 4 cups – roughly 1 liter – of water per hour, as this is the maximum amount a healthy person’s kidneys can handle at one time.

Weight loss is another area where enthusiasm can backfire. If the therapy is paired with excessive calorie restriction, you may actually gain weight after the therapy ends. Restricting your calorie intake too much reduces the number of calories you burn at rest and causes a spike in the hormone ghrelin, which increases hunger. The rebound effect can undo whatever short-term progress you made.

The morning water ritual practiced across Japan is neither a miracle cure nor a waste of time. It encourages a habit – consistent hydration – that genuinely supports brain function, energy, blood pressure regulation, and digestive comfort. What it cannot do, based on current evidence, is cleanse your intestines, cure chronic disease, or replace the role that a balanced diet plays in shaping your gut health.
