You read correctly, The Princess Diaries 3 is finally happening. According to an article from The Hollywood Reportera script is being penned for a third film by Aadrita Mukerji while Debra Martin Chase will reprise her role as producer.

The first film was released in 2001 and based on the novel by Meg Cabot. Starring Anne Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis –  an unsuspecting heir to the throne of Genovia – and Julie Andrews as Queen, the romantic comedy remains a core memory for nineties teens around the world. Fear not Mia purists, according to the publication the new film won’t be a reboot and will attempt to pick up where the second film ended.

It is not known who from the original cast will return, but Hathaway has expressed her support for a third film in the past.

“There is a script for the third movie…. There is a script,” she told Watch What Happens Live in 2019. “I want to do it. Julie [Andrews] wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen. It’s just we don’t want to unless it’s perfect, because we love it just as much as you guys love it. It’s as important to us as it is to you, and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it, so…”

Andrews however feels she is too old for the next instalment. Earlier this year the 86-year-old told Entertainment Tonight, “It depends what the story is, and if they can come up with something, that would be wonderful. But if not, there will be other things.”

The forthcoming film has the backing of Disney however it is not known who will direct the new movie. Garry Marshall, the filmmaker behind the first two, sadly died in 2016.

Stay tuned for further developments!
