Following warnings by the MHRA [Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency] in the UK that those with a history of allergic reaction should not receive the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, the United States Food and Drug Administration has reported side effects from the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine after instances of swelling in patients who have previously received dermal fillers.

“It is possible the localised swelling in these cases is due to an inflammatory reaction from interaction between the immune response after vaccination and the dermal filler.”

A 54-page FDA Briefing Document about the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine seen by Grazia – which can be read in full here – as part of Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee Meeting, reported three instances of facial swelling following the vaccine in patients with dermal fillers, two of which were considered SAEs – Serious Adverse Effects. The findings conclude, “It is possible the localised swelling in these cases is due to an inflammatory reaction from interaction between the immune response after vaccination and the dermal filler.
