HBO’s newest original The Idol has been making a lot of headlines recently with its extreme portrayal of toxicity, misogyny and X-rated scenes. Just like The Idol’s creators Sam Levinson and The Weeknd (aka Abel Tesfaye) have claimed for it to be “sick and twisted,” the show is a considerably darker and filthy rendition of the teen drama Euphoria. Although we’re only on episode two of the show so far, can we expect The Idol season 2? Keep scrolling to find out.

The story follows the journey of a young pop star,  Jocelyn who is mourning the death of her mother and Tedros, a slimy DJ and club owner. With the recent release of episode two, the ratings for the show seem to have dropped significantly. The show received ratings of 27% on Rotten Tomatoes and 5/10 on IMDB. The initial director of the show, Amy Seimetz, had envisioned the story as a female-led one. Which, according to various accounts, was quickly abandoned following her departure since it headed too far into a “female perspective.” Other reports suggest the reason for her departure was production delay and creative overhaul. After watching The Idol, some fans are concerned about the show’s trajectory for Euphoria’s season 3. Although this show has received its fair share of criticism, there are plenty of people who seemingly loved the two episodes and are waiting on more. So, will there be another season?

There hasn’t been any official announcement regarding this. With being at only episode 2, viewers are still waiting to see where the show is headed. The Idol has also been presented as a limited series, which suggests that there may not be any intention for the plot to continue past season 1. Although actress Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who plays Destiny in the show, states “I absolutely think there’s a season two. I’m not saying it’s official, but there’s definitely a whole vast world that could be developed,” in an interview with Deadline’s Cannes Studio. Other factors like critic reviews may also affect whether the show will be renewed for another season or not.
