A new “landmark” project is being spearheaded by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai.
The emirate is undergoing an important and ambitious effort to increase coral life, which coincides with COP28 being underway. First revealed in May 2023, the endeavour known as Dubai Reef is among one of the largest marine reef developments globally.
And now the initiative has been formally commenced by Sheikh Hamdan in an overarching strategic objective is to attain carbon neutrality by 2050.

The “landmark project”, as described by the Dubai Media Office, is said to cover 600 square kilometres of the emirate’s waters. Spanning from the Palm Jebel Ali to the Dubai Islands. The coral reefs’ overall volume is expected to exceed 400,000 cubic meters. With the goal of increasing eight times the population of fish and biomass within the following ten years. In addition, every year, about seven million tonnes of carbon dioxide will be captured.
The project is a component of the city’s initiatives to promote sustainable fishing, expand fish stocks and enhance food security. In addition, the Dubai Reef project will be essential for lowering carbon emissions and boosting marine biodiversity. The project is expected to further solidify Dubai’s standing as one of the top three global cities, fulfilling the goals stated in the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, to raise Dubai’s status as a leading sustainable city.
Sheikh Hamdan emphasized that the UAE’s top priorities are protecting the environment, protecting animals and fostering biodiversity.
“Dubai is strongly dedicated to making substantial contributions to global efforts to mitigate the impact of climate change through initiatives that promote the sustainability of our natural environment, with particular emphasis on coral reefs,” he said.
Sheikh Hamdan has also emphasised the need for a focused and increased commitment to initiating high-impact initiatives and promoting the adoption of best practices that guarantee environmental sustainability.
