Committed to innovation in every way, the UAE will host COP28 this year. Established by the United Nations, the COP (which stands for Conference of the Parties) gathers world leaders and the supreme government, to collaboratively catapult initiatives that unwind the climate crisis.

Held in Expo City Dubai, this year’s COP28 will take place from November 30th to December 12th. While this may be the UAE’s first climate change conference of this scale, it has drawn in an immense crowd. With over 140 head of states and senior government officials, alongside the 80,000 plus delegates, it’s safe to say the world will be tuning in.

With COP28 just a week away, we have gathered everything you need to know about the world altering conference and the work it intends to get down.

What is COP28 UAE?

Functioning on the belief that more can be achieved united than in solitude, the COP28 UAE will gather many. With 200 countries being represented, the debates, negotiations, and conversations will be mighty and tense.

Established in 1995, COPs call on activators of many kinds. From international powers and officials to negotiators, NGOs and civil society. It calls on those who want to confront the problem of our time by introducing new novel ideas that propel our world.

Held in Expo City, COP28 UAE has a unique space that allows for the intermixing of world leaders and the public, fostering a wider engaging conversation. Specifically, “the green zone” is open to all who are interested in getting involved in the movement towards climate solutions. Hosting conversations and activities on how health, government and technology interact with our changing climate. This is a moment to learn how to adopt changes in your life and your communities.

For those interested in how fashion and the climate correspond, ICD Brookfield Place is hosting a “Changemakers Hub” on the 5th and 6th December. In collaboration with VCA and the Conduit, they will have a series of industry leaders and innovators in panel discussion. Exploring topics like sustainable fashion, material service, culture and more.

The goal of each COP is to reach an “accord”, defined as a shared agreement between all attending parties. The last major accord was The Paris Agreement from COP15. It set a framework to a global response to the rising temperatures, that spans borders and industries. COP28 UAE is set to be the first global stock-take since, measuring the progress towards the set goals.

UAE Continues Blazing A Trail

Armed with its disruptive nature, the UAE set ambitious targets to combat the climate change. Specifically stating a 70 per cent reduction in the nation’s carbon foot print and 50 per cent clean energy goal by 2050. But the UAE doesn’t just talk the talk, they walk it as well.
