On Tuesday night, the Sharjah Police officially announced a ban on the display of fireworks for New Year’s Eve celebrations to show solidarity for the people of war-stricken Gaza. The authorities have urged all individuals to comply, lest legal action be taken against those caught violating the rule.
The UAE has previously set world records regarding fireworks celebrations for the New Year, where the city lights up every year with spectacular drone shows and hour-long displays of fireworks. However, this year this year the emirate of Sharjah will be silent affair with the cancellation of all celebratory displays.
Earlier in October, several events and concerts had also been cancelled or postponed in the region, including the Culture Summit Abu Dhabi, Macklemore concert, Tanweer Sacred Hearts Festival in Sharjah and more. Recently the government has also called off New Year’s displays at Al Majaz Waterfront.
The UAE welcomes the adoption of UNSC Resolution 2720, which requests that the SG appoint a Senior Coordinator for aid deliveries in Gaza and establishes a new UN aid mechanism.

The Ministry of the UAE has provided constant assistance and humanitarian aid for the people in the Gaza Strip with the launch of Tarahum for Gaza back in October. Sultan Al Shamsi the Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Development and International Organisations Affairs stated, “In light of the continuous efforts made by the UAE to provide relief to the Palestinian people, work is underway in a number of places to provide humanitarian and relief support to the Palestinian brothers in the Gaza Strip.”
They had sent 68 tonnes of vital food supplies to the area and aims to send more relief packages. The region also urged residents to donate clothes, money and essentials for the distressed civilians. Several malls across the nation have also opened the opportunity for shoppers to donate.
