It’s been all about Priyanka Chopra Jonas this week thanks to the release of the actress’ first memoir, Unfinished. The book covers everything from Chopra’s childhood, growing up in India before moving to the U.S. as a teen – and the bullying she endured while at school there – to Miss World, and, of course, meeting her husband, Nick Jonas.
In one of the chapters detailing the period before they got engaged, Chopra wrote about a trip to India that she and Jonas took in June 2018, shortly after they started dating. Busy with work commitments and worried about what Jonas would do in her absence, Chopra said the musician ensured her he’d be fine, saying that he planned on taking her mother, Madhu Chopra, out for lunch.
“I zipped right into worrying mode,”she wrote, explaining that she was unsure about what the two would talk about or if they’d embarrass her. So, naturally, she decided to take matters into her own hands and spy on the pair.
“That afternoon, I sat in a meeting surrounded by 20 people and couldn’t stop wondering what Nick and my mum were doing at that very moment,” she wrote. “Unable to take the suspense any longer, I sent a member of my security team out to take pictures of them at the restaurant they’d gone to — OK, to spy on them — so I could study their body language using my ‘Quantico’ skills.”
Chopra also opened up about the spying incident during a virtual appearance on “A Little Late With Lilly Singh”, saying, “I sent my security guy and I was like, ‘Why don’t you just go to the hotel and just call me from there?’ And he goes to the hotel and he calls me from there and I was like, ‘Take your camera out and take a picture of where they are and send it to me.'” She added that the man tasked with the detective work “didn’t ask me questions.”
The actress said she came clean to Jonas about the spying later, and he was unfazed by it. “I was gathering information,” said joked. “It’s very important for a woman to gather information. Knowledge is power.”
Thankfully for Chopra, her security guards didn’t lip read, too. Unbeknownst to her at the time, Jonas had told her mother during lunch that he wanted to propose and asked for her blessing. Adorable.
