Nail trends might appear and disappear with the same cadence as your Instagram newsfeed, but one could argue that many just riff on the classic styles that we always come back to. Case in point: the latest nail obsession, dubbed the outline French manicure, or double French nails.

The trend takes the classic French tip and inverts it, expanding the white tip to instead frame the edges of the nail with the base typically left neutral – like a thick tip that isn’t filled in, or the nail equivalent of negative space eyeliner.

It provides a chic, modern twist to the much-loved nail design, which has seen somewhat of a resurgence in recent years. It also allows for the wearer to get creative with inventive colour combinations, with our favourites being neon green à la 2020-era Billie Eilish and soft lilac.

You can also mix up the effect with your shape, with the design working for both rounded, square and ‘squoval’ styles. Keen for some inspiration ahead of your next nail appointment? Scroll on.

This coffin-shaped nail works perfectly with the outline French design, which employs opposing shapes for a decidedly architectural take.

We love this rainbow riff on the classic French design.

The original colour combination still looks fresh with this design.

As does this glitter iteration that practically insists your digits be wrapped around a cosmopolitan.

We’re officially obsessed with this electric blue shade with the double French outline.

Not sure if this fashion-forward design is for you? Dip your pinky in with this subtle interpretation of the trend.

Yes, you can do a red and white nail design without it veering too far into festive territory, as seen above.

A striking outline French in kaleidoscope colours.

We love how this set gets creative with the colour combinations across each and every nail, for a summery set.
