Less than one week after the industry said goodbye to journalist Andre Leon Talley, fashion is mourning the death of French couturier Manfred Thierry Mugler, aged 73. The cause of his death is not known.
A statement announcing his death was published to the designer’s Instagram page today alongside a black square. “We are devastated to announce the passing of Mr Manfred Thierry Mugler on Sunday January 23rd 2022. May his soul Rest In Peace,” the caption read.
The current creative director of Mugler, Casey Cadwallader, honoured the designer on social media. “Manfred, I am so honored to have known you and to work within your beautiful world,” he wrote in an Instagram post. “You changed our perception of beauty, of confidence, of representation, and self empowerment. Your legacy is something I carry with me in everything I do. Thank you.”
The legendary Mugler founded his eponymous brand in the ’70s before rising to stardom in the ’90s for his sensual silhouettes, precision cuts and the founding of power dressing for women. He retired from his namesake fashion house in 2003, only to make an incredible return in 2019 to dress Kim Kardashian in a wet look gown for the Met Gala.
More to come. In the meantime, revisit some Mugler’s famous fashion moments.
