Her Excellency Khawla Al Serkal is highly acclaimed for her leading role in the Sharjah Ladies Club (SLC) as Director General. The SLC is a dedicated destination for women and children to utilise and enjoy unique recreational and educational facilities; in both leisure and luxury.

With her pioneering role in the SLC, along with the vision of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Her Excellency has been one of the contributing factors that influenced Sharjah’s growth and popularity. By offering a destination that focuses solely on women and children, she has created a space for women to express themselves and feel comfortable enough to do so.

With Emirati Women’s Day coming up on August 28, Khawla explains what it means for her to be an Emirati and shares a few words of wisdom for the younger generation of Emirati women. Below, read our exclusive interview with Khawla, where we discuss her leading role in the SLC.

GRAZIA: You’ve dedicated your life’s work to championing women. How has this shaped you as an individual and where does your drive come from?

K.W.: My dedication to advocating for women has enriched my personal and professional growth. Embracing and understanding the diverse needs women encounter across various life stages, especially given that I share these experiences, has been immensely rewarding for me and continues to drive me each and every day.

GRAZIA: Your role as Director General of Sharjah Ladies Club perfectly ties in with this. What does your role involve?

K.W.: As Director General, my role encompasses setting a visionary course for SLC, crafting our annual strategies, and ensuring that our targets align with our broader vision. It’s about leading a dedicated team towards a unified direction.

GRAZIA: In what way did SLC progress the most, in your opinion, since its establishment in 1982 by Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of the Ruler of Sharjah, Chairperson of Sharjah Ladies Club?

K.W.: Since its foundation in 1982, SLC has undergone tremendous transformation and growth. What resonates most with me is the club’s evolution from a budding initiative to a trusted brand. Today, SLC is not just a space; it represents a legacy and a trusted institution that many look up to and learn from.

GRAZIA: How would you describe the dynamic in working with an all-female team?

K.W.: The essence of an all-female team at SLC is rooted in shared experiences and a personal understanding of the women we aim to serve. While my experiences in mixed teams have been valuable, the unity and insights that arise in an all female environment is undeniably special and empowering.

GRAZIA: Throughout the years, what changes have you witnessed in the UAE for women and female empowerment?

K.W.: The UAE has witnessed significant advancements in the positioning and recognition of women in society.

GRAZIA: In what way(s) do you hope to empower women in the UAE?

K.W.: The women of the UAE stand empowered, a testament to our visionary rulers who have consistently championed the growth of our nation and its people. It fills me with immense pride and assurance, knowing that our leadership is dedicated to fostering even greater empowerment for us whenever required.

GRAZIA: What is your advice for the younger generation of Emirati women?

K.W.: Embrace challenges as opportunities. In every life journey, patience and resilience will guide you through.

GRAZIA: What does being an Emirati woman mean to you? And what is the most important thing to you as an Emirati woman?

K.W.: Being Emirati is a profound source of pride. Our visionary leaders have paved the way for us to achieve anything we set our sights on, instilling in us a deep sense of trust and motivation.

GRAZIA: Would you like to send a message to Emirati women in celebration of Emirati Women’s Day?

K.W.: To all Emirati women, I am truly proud of your achievements on both national and global stages. Each one of you is a testament to our collective strength and resilience.
