Over five decades have passed and Emirati women have proved that their impact on the UAE transcends profoundly. Emirati women have undoubtedly made their mark in the region as they continue to hold leadership positions and delve into diverse fields such as business, science and fashion. Through hard work and perseverance, these women have been able to contribute to the country’s unprecedented growth and evolution. It is therefore important to celebrate these remarkable qualities and recognise their pivotal role in shaping the nation’s growth.

The UAE’s pioneering initiatives in gender equality and empowerment have fostered a nurturing haven, encouraging women to authentically express themselves and partake in incredible achievements. Emirati Women’s Day stands as a lively celebration of sisterhood and empowerment for women in the UAE; it is one that promotes and inspires breakthroughs among women.

WHAT IS EMIRATI WOMEN’S DAY?

Marked each year on August 28, the annual occasion was introduced in 2015 by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak to celebrate not only the major progress the region has made in terms of gender equality, but to empower and support women of the Emirates. It further celebrates the achievements and accomplishments of those women in the nation, and highlights the importance of Emirati women to the growth of the UAE.

The eighth edition of the holiday will lie on the 28th of August, 2023, as any other year. The date, August 28, was strategically chosen by Sheikha Fatima as it coincides with the day the UAE’s General Women’s Union (GWU) was established in 1975.

Her Highness has been a longtime supporter and advocate of women’s rights in the region. Sheikha Fatima, also known as the “Mother of the Nation,” is the President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, the Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union (GWU) and the Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF). She is one of the main driving forces behind the region’s societal progression.

THIS YEAR’S THEME

The special occasion has a unique theme each year. Sheikha Fatima has announced that this year’s theme will be, “We Collaborate for Tomorrow,” which was specifically chosen to align with the UAE President, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s overarching objective that 2023 will be the “Year of Sustainability.” This reflects the UAE’s commitment to move closer towards sustainability and partake in inventive solutions.

In a statement in April, Sheikha Fatima says, “Every year, we proudly announce an inspiring theme for Emirati Women’s Day, and this national occasion is a priority for us. This day highlights a set of objectives which aligns with the country’s global leadership in recognising and empowering women.”
