History has been made in the world of Arab cinema with the announcement of the recent Academy Awards nominees for 2024.

Kaouther Ben Hania has become the first Arab woman to be nominated for two Oscars in a row, which was announced on Tuesday ahead of the official Academy Awards ceremony on March 11, 2024.

The Tunisian director has been nominated for Best Documentary Feature Film for Four Daughters (Les Filles d’Olfa), which stars A-list Tunisian actor, Hend Sabri.

After receiving a standing ovation during its showing and competing for a Palme d’Or at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in 2023, the movie has garnered a lot of praise. Four Daughters is a potent drama that was co-produced internationally. It follows the tale of a mother from Tunisia who is searching for answers after her two older daughters get indoctrinated and join ISIS.

This Oscar nomination marks the second time Ben Hania has earned an Academy Award nomination. She was nominated for Best International Feature Film at the 2021 Oscars with her film The Man Who Sold His Skin.

The Academy Awards 2024 will take place on March 11, 2024 in Los Angeles.
