In devastating news today, Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet have announced their separation after four years of marriage and 16 years of dating. The Aquaman actor released a joint statement on Instagram.
“We have all felt the squeeze and changes of these transformational times… A revolution is unfolding and our family is of no exception… feeling and growing from the seismic shifts occurring,” the joint statement read. “And so we share our Family news that we are parting ways in marriage.”
“We share this not because we think it’s newsworthy but so that as we go about our lives we may do so with dignity and honesty. The love between us carries on, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived. We free each other to be who we are learning to become…”
The statement continued, “Our devotion unwavering to this sacred life our children. Teaching our children what’s possible. Living the Prayer. May Love Prevail✨ J & L.”
The social media post was accompanied by a series of images including a sunset and a person holding a baby bird.
The couple started dating in 2005. Momoa recalled their meet-cute in an appearance for The Late Late Show with James Cordon in 2017 and said it was a right place, right time kind of moment.
“I literally turned around and I see her and she goes, ‘I’m Lisa.’ I turned around to my friend and I [pretended to scream]. I had f—ing fireworks going off inside, man,” he told the host. “I convinced her to take me home, because I was living in a hotel.”
Momoa and Bonet welcomed their first child, Lola, in July 2007 and their second, Nakoa-Wolf, in December 2008. It wasn’t until October 2017 that the couple wed. Bonet was previously married to Lenny Kravitz and raised the now Hollywood star, Zoë Kravitz.
The tragic split comes as a surprise for many. In a 2018 interview with GRAZIA, Momoa gushed about Bonet, saying, “My woman is my queen. And if you hold your woman as a goddess, take care of her and hold her right, you’re going to be a happy man.”
