Huda Kattan has revealed that the racism she experienced at the start of her career motivated her to become one of the most successful women in the beauty industry.
Speaking to Fortune, the Dubai based make-up mogul shared that growing up in Tennessee, they were the “only brown people in the city” and other children “made us feel like we were not beautiful”.
Huda also detailed how she used to be jealous of her younger sister Mona as she competed in pageants and “looked like a doll”.
“If you know anything about Middle Eastern families, the lighter-skinned you are, the more beautiful you are,” she said. “Ultimately, I just felt like I didn’t belong, and I wanted to feel beautiful… I felt like if I could feel beautiful, it would solve a lot of my insecurities.”
However, Huda’s insecurities led her to experimenting with make-up, which in turn helped her go on to create her billion dollar business.
“I felt powerful when I learned how to fix my brows and how to do certain things. I felt really good. I felt like I had a secret,” she added.
