As a global superstar with fame, fortune and the proverbial world at his feet, you might think someone like Harry Styles would have no reason to go to therapy.

But the former One Direction star who has just released his second album, Fine Lines, has shared that although he once believed he didn’t need therapy, it has changed his life, and his perspective.

Speaking to DJ and producer Zane Lowe during a radio interview for Apple Music’s Beats 1 radio Friday, Harry shared that when he was recording his first album, writers block forced him to address some underlying issues that he didn’t want to admit to.

“I think for a really long time, especially when I started coming to California, there was a big thing for me where I felt like everyone went to therapy,” the 25-year-old said. “And I think for a long time I was like, ‘I don’t need that. You know, it’s very like British way of looking at it, I think.”

“When you’re trying to make music, it’s so navel-gazing. Making an album, I feel like, is the most self-indulgent time you can think of really. Because you’re just like, ‘How do I feel about this?’ I think with the therapy thing, I just realized I was just getting in my own way,” he added.
