No matter how far we come as a society, it still seems as though the first question a woman is asked upon marrying is one that’s to do with when (not if!) they’re going to have children. Meghan Markle has spoken about it, Kourtney Kardashian recently shut down rumours, Jennifer Aniston has been plagued by similar enquiries for decades (and recently revealed she was going through IVF the entire time), and, since marrying Justin Bieber in 2018, Hailey Bieber has been at the forefront of it.

Earlier this year, after an article questioned if “a little #Belieber,” the 26-year-old candidly wrote, “I’m not pregnant, leave me alone,” and during the 2021 Met Gala she expertly swiped her husband’s hand off her stomach on the red carpet, mouthing to him, “they’ll think I’m pregnant!” in the process.

Now, she’s taken to her Instagram Stories to get ahead of the reports of a baby bump, revealing she’s not pregnant, but rather suffering from an ovarian cyst.

“I have a cyst on my ovary the size of an apple,” Bieber told her 49.3 million followers, alongside a mirror selfie of her exposed belly. “I don’t have endometriosis or PCOS, but I have gotten an ovarian cyst a few times and it’s never fun.”

“Not a baby,” she continued “It’s painful and achey and makes me feel nauseous and bloated and crampy and emotional.” Bieber added that she’s sure many of her fans will “relate” and “understand” writing to them, “we got this.”

According to Healthline, cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can pop up all over the body, including on the ovaries. Many women will develop at least one cyst during their lifetime and in most cases, they are painless and cause no symptoms. However, ovarian cysts can, at times, cause abdominal bloating or swelling, painful bowel movements, pelvic pain before or during the menstrual cycle, painful intercourse, pain in the lower back or thighs, breast tenderness and nausea and vomiting.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (POC) — a condition Bieber noted she thankfully doesn’t have — can mean the ovaries contain a large number of small cysts and if left untreated, polycystic ovaries can cause infertility.
