Kuwaiti fashion influencer Fatima Almomen’s battle in court continues.
In a recent development, the Court of Cassation in Kuwait has refused to stop the implementation of Almomen’s imprisonment and has set a new date in the legal saga.
On June 24, 2024, the court refused to halt the enforcement of her three-year sentence, which had been previously upheld by lower courts, according to an Etibilarabi report.
The Court of Cassation has now scheduled a session for July 14, 2024, to continue deliberations and hear further pleadings in the case.
Previous Proceedings
The legal trouble began following a tragic incident on August 29, 2023. Almomen was detained after being involved in a fatal car crash at the intersection of Al Soor Street and King Fahad Bin Abdul Aziz Road. This accident resulted in the deaths of two individuals, identified as Walid Jassim Muhammad Al Mutairi and Yousef Badr Al Kaami, and left two others injured, as per Arab News.
The video of the crash quickly garnered attention online.
On October 25, 2023, the Kuwaiti Misdemeanour Court handed down a sentence of three years in prison and revoked Almomen’s driving licence for one year. The charges included manslaughter, jumping a red light, and exceeding the speed limit during the accident. Despite various rumours about her state at the time of the crash, an official laboratory test confirmed that Almomen was not under the influence of drugs, according to an Arab News report.
